Good info on shotgun ammo. But for consideration, take what ever ammo you have, and try it at “in house” distances. Then “in yard” distances. Then “in neigjborhood” distances.
Then, consider your situation-
Do you want to dropem where they stand? -or-
Do you want to stop them, and have them go someplace else?
Shoot to stop is the current legal buzz phrase. Totally irrelevant, actually, because a good shoot is a good shoot, regardless! And as long as one can reasonably articulate an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm, to you or another, it should be a good shoot!
